The pathology of subarachnoid hemorrhage and its subsequent effects are not completely understood and few treatment options are available. Detailed studies of subarachnoid hemorrhage in humans can’t be performed in living patients and the amount of information that can be obtained from post-mortem examinations is limited. Animal models are therefore essential to the study of subarachnoid hemorrhage and its effects. Numerous models have been developed in a wide variety of species, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The purpose of this review is to summarize the currently available animal models for the study of subarachnoid hemorrhage.

A Novel Intravital Method to Evaluate Cerebral Vasospasm in Rat Models of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Study with Synchrotron Radiation Angiography

Precise in vivo evaluation of cerebral vasospasm caused by subarachnoid hemorrhage has remained a critical but unsolved issue in experimental small animal models. In this study, we used synchrotron radiation angiography to study the vasospasm of anterior circulation arteries in two subarachnoid hemorrhage models in rats. Synchrotron radiation angiography, laser Doppler flowmetry-cerebral blood ...

Subarachnoid hemorrhage fails to produce vasculopathy or chronic blood flow changes in rats.

Cerebral blood flow was measured by a [14C]butanol indicator fractionation technique in rats subjected to subarachnoid hemorrhage, in control rats, and in rats given injections of buffered saline into the subarachnoid space (sham hemorrhage). Cerebral blood flow was significantly decreased in both the subarachnoid hemorrhage and sham hemorrhage rats 3 hours after injection. However, blood flow ...

گزارش یک مورد تشخیص زود هنگام مالفورماسیون شریانی وریدی براساس یافته‌های سونوگرافی داپلر ترانس کرانیال و تطابق آن با ام-آر آنژیوگرافی

Received: 8 Oct, 2008 Accepted: 11 Feb, 2009   Abstract   Arteriovenous Malformation( AVM ) is one of the most common etiologies of subarachnoid hemorrhage. In the past, conventional angiography was the only way for the diagnosis of AVM but nowadays, using noninvasive devices such as MRA and recently TCD, the diagnosis of AVM is revaluated.   This patient is a 19 year old man who was admitte...

Cardiac Complication Following Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

Besides its severe neurological injuries, spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) commonly causes cardiac complications. These complications could include three different aspects of cardiac diseases, that is, electrocardiographic abnormalities, myocardial injuries, and left ventricular dysfunction. These complications not only may lead to misdiagnosis of SAH as myocardial infarction, but also...

Calcium and Potassium Channels in Experimental Subarachnoid Hemorrhage and Transient Global Ischemia

Healthy cerebrovascular myocytes express members of several different ion channel families which regulate resting membrane potential, vascular diameter, and vascular tone and are involved in cerebral autoregulation. In animal models, in response to subarachnoid blood, a dynamic transition of ion channel expression and function is initiated, with acute and long-term effects differing from each o...
